Security where I worked from '51 to '54. We screened PSQs, took

workers. That is where I met Janet Hallenbeck ('49) who was our

Dear Ethel, Lori and Cheryl,
I am so sorry to hear about your Father in todays Sandstorm. I
had no idea that he was so ill. I will miss him at the Club40
gatherings and the reunion this year. Although I did not know him
long, and had only just gotten him back into the swing of it all, I
felt that I had known him for a long time. Talking to him on the
phone was such a delight and I wish that we could have had him in
our midst longer. He will be sorely missed.
Please know that the prayers, thoughts and the hearts of all of
us on the Club40 board go out to you all; his family. We all know
that he is in a far better place and is Home in the Arms of the
Lord. He is at peace and may God Bless him and you all. May God
help you through this time of grief and to heal from it.

I remember when I was in PE in whatever grade and Howard was
our teacher, I got caught running in the shower room, I think that
I still have the welts on my butt from that day. But later on
in life my wife and I (Nancy) got to help at the marina on Lake
Chelan, what a great weekend and I also still remember that cold
water. These are truly great people: Howard and Helen.

Bakersfield area Bombers had their January luncheon on Sunday,
the 30th. Those in attendance were: Rex Hunt ('53WB) and wife,
Cheryl; Richard Greenhalgh ('59) and wife, Stella; Donni Clark
Dunphy ('63), husband, Gary, and her mother, Ione; and me, Linda
Reining ('64). Coco's made room for us, again, and as always, the
service was good, as was the food. We missed those that didn't
make it, but hope to see you at the next one. I know there are
Bombers living in areas close to Bakersfield, so keep hoping they
will "brave" the drive and come and see that we are a neat bunch...
"try it, you'll like it".

evidently the Sandstorm was down for a while.
Anyway, I have learned of the deaths of Bernie Simpson ('46-RIP)
and Pat Doctor Roberts ('48-RIP). These folks will be missed. I
have not seen Pat in many years, but I have been close to Ethel
and Bernie all this time, nearly 60 years. My sympathy to all the
families.

Thanks for the information. 3000, 1100, and 200-W were the only
three areas that I did not work in. The 400 and 600 Areas were
added later.
How many PSQ's did I do? Eight, if I remember right: three of the
LONG ones and five of the short ones. And pictures: lost track. I
know one year they took my picture and had a man's name below my
picture. It was the only time I had to have two pictures taken on
the same day. Aw sweet memories.
My father came to Pasco on the train (as most of us did). When
daddy got off the train he was met and the first thing they did was
take him to a building in Pasco to have his picture taken. At that
time the badges were slimmer and longer than the badges I later
received (7 years later). Don't know what happened but for 15 years
his hair was at the top of the picture and he appeared to be bald.
He never became bald. It was fun to look at that picture and have
a laugh.
How 'bout that Mink, LA? Getting phones for the first time. I
remember in 1976 that the phone companies back in the hills of
Kentucky had to use mules in order the install phone lines in
that location.

Yes I will be at the luncheon on Saturday, February 5th at

men of the class of '60 and as well as spouses of the attendees are

One of my greatest memories of you Mr. Chitty is when you were
a teacher of our sixth grade class at Spalding. We students had the
best of both worlds. Mr. Galati was our teacher in the morning and
you were the afternoon teacher. During our morning class with Mr.
Galati we would rush to get our work done so we could learn about
Ornithology. The afternoon class with you, we all rushed to get our
work done so we could spend more time at recess. I remember one
recess when it had snowed. You let us stay out on the field for far
more time than the 15 minute recess (this happened quite often).
Snow balling with you included brought a lot of happy faces. Not
that you were always the target but you got your share.
Our major project that year that was so fun, was you had
arranged for us as a class to go to a nature camp at a lodge up
in the Cascade mountains. We stayed at the Rustic Inn. Part of the
plan was to learn about and plant evergreen trees. To accomplish
this financially the class collected well over 3000 coat hangers to
be sold to the Richland Laundry. (For years I had a picture of you
and the class on the front porch of Spalding with boxes of hangars.
I think we were in the newspaper also from our accomplishment. In
my moving recently back to West Richland I can't seem to find the
picture I am sorry to say.) We busted every record there must have
been to make this happen. On to camp we went. I still remember
planting a beautiful small evergreen tree. I've thought many times
of going up to the Rustic Inn to try and find it. Any other Bomber
from the class remember our trip?
There are so many other great memories of that year. Especially
your great smile. If it was a frown we knew we had done something
wrong. You made everything so fun, how could we get in trouble.
Many, many years later my mother Norma Jones would run into you
somewhere in Richland. This seemed to be in the late '80s early
'90s. She always gave me a report about seeing you. She also sends
a hello to you. Mom's hanging in there. Will be 85 in June.
By all the reports from your children I know they are taking
great care of you. Thank you for being our teacher so many years
ago. Who was to know it would bring such great memories. You drove
home to the heart what being outdoors means.

Arrggghhh... did you have to bring up the subject of recycling?
This is the only place where I have lived where there is not
recycling. Do not seem to find plans for this area to do it either.

Re: Old Gym
According to the expensive Tri-City Herald, the days of the old
gym are numbered and that number includes a date of March 19th when
a dance (does that mean a sock hop?) is held called Bringing Down
The House with the Kingsmen live in concert. I have been watching
some of my fellow classmates' kids play hoops for the Bombers the
last couple years. The sophomore and ninth grade games are held in
the old gym and you can feel the floor shake when they dribble and
when you walk up the stairs to your seat you can feel the old metal
floor move a bit. I guess when they play Louie Louie the gym may
literally come crashing down before the demolition crew takes care
of it.
Does anyone know what the school is going to do with the floor
in the big gym? I was told it was replaced but in fact is was
repaired, resanded, and repainted and you can still feel the old
hard floor when you walk on it. The first idea was to sell the
floor pieces to pay for it but then I heard the levy was going to
replace it.

Greg is so correct about the gym being totally demolished with
the remodeling job coming up on Richland/Columbia High School. The
thunder will be gone when it comes down, and I know we all remember
the thunder we could make in that gym. Specially when we all got to
stomping our feet on the bleachers in there during an assembly. Those
were the days weren't they?
Greg is also correct about the shindig coming up on March 19,
2005 from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Dawald gyms. Between the
Bomber Booster club, AKA Kim Oates and Club40, AKA I ain't tellin',
the term "Bringing Down the House, Last Prom" Farewell has been
coined. So get those dates lined up you all and come share this event
with the many classmates that I am sure will attend. This is going
to be one heck of a blast from the past and you won't wanna miss it.
Last chance to take that special someone you were afraid to ask years
ago to the "Prom". ;o)
THE KINGSMEN will be there to help us say farewell to our beloved
thunder-gym and rock down the house with their glorious music and
the best rendition we know of Louie Louie. How could anyone resist a
chance to spend an evening with THE KINGSMEN? And they wanted to be
here to play when they heard we were having this party. Had to be
there they told us. They know how Bombers love to party, and can
party with the best.
Tickets are only $15.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door--IF
there even are any tickets left by door-time. I can't imagine that
this will be the case, but taking a chance is not something I would
wanna do. I am buying mine NOW. ;o) Tickets can be purchased at all
upcoming Girls and Boys Basketball games and at Richland's Albertsons
stores starting Monday the 7th; and, through me by emailing me at
judywillox@charter.net After I have a list I will let the Boosters
know how many are needed from my list. If you want to send a check
and your name address and etc. to the Club 40 mailbox, you may also

I was hoping to have the paper article to scan and send out here,
but could not find a paper anywhere, so you will just have to take
Greg Alley's and my word for this. It is a happening thing Bombers

order in advance, but as yet I do not have the picture of that to
show you. Watch future Sandstorms for more information on that
to come. And tell all those friends you know, who are not on the
internet or have a computer, all about this fun party they will want
to attend. Also watch future Sandstorms for information on the floor
souvenirs that will be available to purchase. I understand that the
coaches would be willing to autograph these souvenirs and wouldn't
that be a treat to own? More information on the t-shirts and the
floor souvenirs on a future date.
Greg, to answer your question on the floor in the big gym--I
dunno. :o) I do think that a new floor for that gym is scheduled into
the remodeling of the school, but I could check and make sure that
this information is correct for you if ya like. And I will see you at

BUT SOMETHING TOUCHED ME DEEP INSIDE, "THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED."
Jiles P. Richardson, Charles Holly, Richard Valenzuela and
Roger A. Peterson, pilot of the plane were killed in the crash
of a chartered airplane when it fell within minutes of takeoff
from the Mason City Airport.
The three passengers were members of a troupe of entertainers
who appeared at the Surf Ballroom at Clear Lake, Iowa, the
evening of February 2, 1959, bound for Fargo, ND and was headed
northwest from the airport at the time of the crash in a stubble
field, 51/2 miles north of Clear Lake, Iowa. The plane was
discovered about 9:00 A.M., February 3, 1959.

A long long time ago... I can still remember when the music used
to play... Oh boy... when you're with me oh boy... Raaaaaaave on
that crazy feelin'... Every day... ah... I remember so well when
Crag Davis ('65), Keith Peterson ('65) and Kenny Peterson ('64) and
I used to buy those books with all the song words and learn them just
as fast as we could... Kenny had a singing group and I guess the rest
of us were his groupies? The "Red Devils" would ride on our bikes
with the club plaques made of glove leather flying from our seats...
man oh man did we have life good or what... no matter what came down
the pike we had the music... I remained that way... full of the music
until '67... then I don't know... just wasn't the same for me... oh
I still loved the music but for the most part was stuck between 1955
and 1967... today I still love my rock-a-billy and could listen to
Narvel Phelps sing "Pink and Black Days" till the grooves fall off
the CD... When we go to Pomona we always visit a guy named Glen Glenn
and listen to his stories of the days when he hung with Elvis and the
rest... We listen to his records and marvel and the gold ones on his
wall... I've got a picture... a candid shot of Glen and Elvis reading
the paper on the floor at somebody's house... and all my Buddy stuff
up there too... Don't get me wrong... Mick Jagger still rocks me and
always will... and except for maybe Sandy (who has a giant cave dug
in his back yard over in Henderson... one leg and he still plays Let
There Be Drums as tho it was all yesterday) and Gene Krupa, Ginger
Baker is the King of drums... So some of the ol' boys may not be with
us any more... As George Jones sang "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes"...
well for me maybe the answer is ain't no one gonna fill their
shoes... but I got it all on CD now these days and I'm still rockin'
so I guess maybe I can live with that... I will miss Waylon... he
kept Buddy alive for me... But then all I gotta do is crank up that
CD and Race with the Devil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To the Chitty family:
I have very fond memories of Howard Chitty. I was fortunate to
meet him as a young child because he was the father of my classmate/
Bluebird/Campfire friend Cindy Chitty ('72). I was a little afraid of
him at first, but quickly warmed to his very dry sense of humor. The
Chitty house had an open door policy, always welcoming friends of
their children. We had so much fun at their house. Who else had a
pool, monkeys in a cage in the back, huge gold painted tumble weeds
for Christmas trees.? Of course Mrs. Chitty was also involved in
the fun. I remember waiting to be picked up after a Campfire girls
meeting and watching with envy the interaction between Mr. and Mrs.
Chitty. One late afternoon at Christmas time, the Chitty house was
lit only by candles everywhere, and the tumbleweed Christmas tree
twinkle lights. Howard looked up from his newspaper and calmly said
"the wall is on fire" and went back to his paper. Mrs. Chitty ran in
from the kitchen, put out the fire, and went back to cooking dinner.
Just another night in the Chitty house.
I am thinking of all of you and hope that the wonderful memories
you must have, keep you strong during this very difficult time.

Greetings from a returned Bomber to the land of the free and the
home of the brave, and just about the easiest country to get around
in I've been in. We returned late Sunday night and I've been trying
to get things organized around here since we've been back. as we left
with Christmas still up (not a good idea), so here I am just putting
Santa away today.
I've been scanning the Sandstorm issues I've missed. Congrats
late to you, Tim Smyth ('62), on the birth of your new grandson!!
Yes, it is a blessing that your daughters and their families are
close by. That's how it was with our family in Richland, we always
had our cousins right in town, and the rest of the family in Eugene,
OR, not far away. Now we're spread out a lot more, except my brother,
Roy ('65) and his family are still in Kennewick. I'll be visiting
them at the end of the month when I come out to see our mom for a few
days. (If they are home, as I missed them when I was out in August.)
And I've sent a note to Howard Chitty, I remember him as the PE
teacher at Spalding Grade School, and best of all when I worked for
them as their babysitter while they taught swim lessons in their back
yard in l960!! I learned a lot doing that, mostly that I was sure I
never wanted to have kids as a single mother, and not for a long
time!! The 3 Chitty kids (then, I know there are 4 now) were a
healthy, lively, and a handful for this l6 year old and to try to
keep up with the house, well, it wasn't a piece of cake.
WE are still sorting things from our trip, and getting our
pictures sorted and developed. It was quite an adventure for this 60
year old. But I will venture forth on another trip later this month:
I will join 2 of my girl friends from Roseville, CA on a cruise to
Mexico for the first week of March. With our snow, which I got caught
in last night and it took me an hour to go 20 miles, I am looking
forward to the sunshine!!

In spite of a very rainy day, our February 1st luncheon came off
without a hitch. In attendance were Maren ('63 & '64), Frank ('63)
and Linda Whiteside, Kent ('53) and Pat Hamrick, Tami Bond Trudell ('63),
Tami's daughter, Miranda and beautiful 9 week old granddaughter, Blair.
Special guests were Chuck ('67) and Chris Crawley from Portland (OR)
who were in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. We enjoyed good conversation,
good food and a lot of old memories as always!
The next lunch will likely be in the spring unless we have some
out-of-town Bombers who want to get together before that.

Hey there Bombers and Bomberettes...
Sometimes even the long-term memory is a problem!!
I didn't make a connection when the Chitty family entrees started.
Figured I missed Mr. Chitty at Spalding and I CERTAINLY didn't go
to Carmichael. But then, some of the references to his house, the
swimming pool & lessons started to sink through the skull. Gosh, I
was one of those lucky kids who learned to swim (sorta) at the Chitty
private pool. I had taken swimming lessons in the "big pool", but
didn't do so well. Mom & Dad thought I should be able to swim, in
case I fell in the water in a car accident or something (they sure
weren't about to let me play in the river or ride in anyone's boat).
So, they dug deep into Dad's radioactive pockets and came up with
enough scratch to cover a 6-week course (I think it was 6 weeks).
Still, I didn't learn to swim very well (back to the thick skull
thing). But my fondest memory was that Mr. Chitty taught me to kneel
on one knee on the edge of the pool and dive in. I still enjoy that!
And now that I wear neither glasses or contacts, I do really enjoy
the water so much more.
See ya at the river this spring, with either a ski boat or a jet ski.

Just one year ago (1/23/04) the Governor's Advisory Council on
Historic Preservation, Washington State Office of Archaeology and
Historic Preservation recognized this area as part of the "Gold Coast
Historic District" in Richland and was listed on the "Washington
Heritage Register of Historic Places."
A local neighbor, Jim McCabe, 509-943-6100, at 1636 Howell in
Richland 99354, is desperately attempting to avoid this from

and he would appreciate any input you are able to provide. The

I'm confused, as the current gym isn't the original gym I
remember where we cheered Daddy Dawald's team to basketball history
for us Bombers ,is it? I remember going to the new gym with my dad
and Uncle Bob, who were among the faithful Bomber supporters for
years, never missing a game in maybe the l980's. (And for all I know
that isn't the current gym, but I think it was the same gym when I
attended the 2002 reunion for our stellar class of l962.) I must
admit that wasn't a big event to me then. I used to yell so much at
the games when I was in Drill Team I almost always got a horrible
headache.
I watched the Happy Days 30th Year Reunion and really enjoyed it.
And it brought back a lot of memories too. The girls in their bobbie
sox and oxfords, what did we call them? Saddle shoes comes to mind.

thawing out after our last snowstorm, but with temperatures over
50° predicted for this weekend, it should all be gone soon. The
lake was frozen when we returned late last Sunday, but I wouldn't
trust it now to stand on.

"2/14/45" picture shows clearly the first gym (#1) that was built.
"RHS 1947" picture looks like they have building materials for
gym #2 stacked up next to gym #1
"9/13/48" and "7/29/54" pictures show gym #1 (which was then
the Girls' gym) and gym #2 (the boys' gym -- the one with
the great "thunder" metal bleachers). I'm betting that
Gene Conley ('48) got to play in that gym when it was
brand new!!
"RHS 1966" overhead picture shows the #1 gym is now gone
(happened in 1963/'64 or so), the #2 gym (which is now
the girls' gym) next to the #3 gym (Dawald Gym and now
the boys' gym).

I read the Sandstorm every day but only write when I need
something. (Sounds like my conversations with God) In May of 2003 my
brother David Bishop ('67) had a heart attack. He did much better
than the doctors said he would and after a long recovery he returned
to his barber shop (Ganzel's) in Richland. Last fall he had more
heart problems and his kidneys failed. Due to his damaged heart and
dialysis three times a week he is in a very weakened state. Sitting
around and doing nothing has been very hard for him. He loves his
work.
I know how caring Bombers are and I was hoping that if you are a
Bomber, went to school with David, knew him from the VFW or if you
knew him from Ganzel's, you would take a minute and send him a
birthday card. His birthday is February 20th. He won't be able to
do much this year and I would like to cheer him up a little.

When I went to Col Hi (1945 - 1951 - 2 years beyond graduation)
most of the time we had one gym. The boys got the gym on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays. The girls got the gym on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. On the days when we (girls) did not have the gym we
studied health in the auditorium. That old auditorium was COLD.
The school year of '46-'47 the school was overloaded (built for 300
students and there were 1000 going to Col Hi). When we would have
health class there were other classes in the auditorium. I assume
the boys did the same. Never asked! Can't remember when the next
two gyms were built but they destroyed the OLD GYM when they built
the third gym.
I loved the Happy Days reunion. The shoes were called saddles. I had
a very wide foot when I was a teenager (women, in those days, did not
have wide feet) and the only shoes I could wear were boys saddles.
The only place in the Tri-Cities where I could buy saddles was in the
old JC Penney's in Downtown Kennewick. The people in Kennewick hated
us (Richlanders) because of all the free stuff that we used to get.
From 1945 until they built Columbia Center in 1965 I never set foot
in Kennewick (and don't now if I can help it - as a result I know
zilch, de nada about Kennewick). I used to try to tell those people
that we did get a lot of free stuff but that we had no freedom. That
was like talking to a blank wall. If you walked into a store and if
they thought you were from Richland they would simply turn their
backs.
Back in the days, as a freshman and sophomore, shoes were rationed
World War II). You had to have stamps in order to buy shoes. Since I
wore boys shoes they lasted longer than girls shoes so I used to give
my stamps to women who had babies or small children. We were only
allowed 3 pair of shoes a year.
Does anyone remember Mrs. Carlisle (sp?). I could not find tennis
shoes to fit me. She kept dinging me to get my gym shoes (tenny
runners). We went shopping one Saturday and every place that we went
did not have wide width tennis shoes so I wore penny loafers for PE.
One day when we were playing soccer my shoe came off and flew up
into the air. Everyone was chasing my tennis shoe - boy we she mad!!!
So goes life!!!

I did not know your brother but it sounds like he needs to develop a
hobby. I collect postcards and that doesn't require too much energy.
Stamps is another hobby that does not require much energy. And you
can make these hobbies as cheap or expensive as you chose. He can
read, collect baseball cards, etc. If his doctor says it is OK he can
learn to play golf, tennis, volunteer to help children read or be a
mentor. The list is endless - I wish your brother well and have put
him on my prayer list. It seems to get longer each day.

After reading the letters concerning Howard I thought I'd insert
my two cents worth. I used to bird hunt with Howard, my ex-father-in-
law, Craig Anderson and Frosty Foust. Howard was an expert with the
duck call and we seldom missed taking our limit home. I've seen him
sit in a blind and talk to ducks that had landed in our decoy spread
with out alarming them. We also hand loaded our shotgun shells in his
basement. One day I got tired of sitting in the blind and decided to
do some jump shooting. I was about 1/4 mile away when I jumped a nice
mallard and pulled down on it. When I fired it sounded like a .22
going off and the shot just rolled out of the barrel. Howard hadn't
put the powder in, just the primer and was all set for a big laugh at
my expense! I'm sure he missed not having the chance to give me a bad
time about it. (I have told that story a number of times and it never
fails to get a chuckle.) He was a lot of fun to be with.

Not sure there are boy gyms and girl gyms. Things have changed.
Classes are co-ed. For now there is the old small 'girl's' gym and
the big Art Dawald Gym with the horrible floor! No one showers that I
know of, and I am told that a lot of the showers don't work or don't
have hot water. They even have to share little PE lockers, for back
packs and clothes!
They have set up some sad looking portables for classrooms in the
parking lot (what used to be the upper level parking lot on Thayer),
so the kids are parking where ever they can fit a car along the
street or across Thayer at the Church or down at the Bomber Bowl.
Trying to drive down the streets is terrible because hardly any of
them will use a crosswalk or walk in groups.
They even have portables set up at Carmichael for classes.
There is only one lunch hour and no way can they feed all of
those kids at one time, so a lot of kids are gone for lunch. Some
kids have no locker, since they have closed the 300 wing (foreign
language building in 1969) for demolition soon, so they have to pack
all of their books in their back pack up and down the hill to go to
Tastee-Freez for lunch.
Last semester the 9th graders didn't get a World Geography book,
they were told that they couldn't get them -- but I know they got
brand new 9th grade Geography books for the 6th grade special
education students at Carmichael! go figure.
The teachers don't all grade the same, the percentages for
grades, wouldn't you think that 90% is a B, not always. Now why
wouldn't that be standard, how can that be fair?
Very confusing to me. I think I am really getting old.

Re: old phonographs
Betty Hiser Gulley ('49) had talked about phonographs a while
back and inspired me to look for some old ones. So I called my
brother and bought a beautiful mahogany 1911 Victrola from him and
had him ship it to me. It was in great shape, needing a few minor
repairs to make it A1, so I looked up a guy that I met at some local
antique shows and located him near Baton Rouge. We went to his house
with the Victrola. He has a huge shop behind his house. Were we in for
a shock! He had more old phonographs, restored and original, than I
had seen altogether in my life. The entire 2100 sq. ft. building was
wall to wall with old phonographs/talking machines, etc. From the
ceiling were tons of motors and parts and wall shelves were stacked
with tons of stuff. On the second floor were phonographs stacked 3
high on top of each other. He told me at a previous antique show that
he had more than 600 antique phonographs! I was in antique heaven
since I collect everything under the sun.
Anyway, he looked at the Victrola and said it was partially
restored and in good shape, but needed the arm rebuilt and a thorough
internal cleaning. While he was telling us this, we were gazing at
the shelves of beautiful, restored hand-crank talking machines.
He told us about them and offered to give me about twice what I
paid for the Victrola on a trade, so my wife, not too happy about
repair expense and having the 50 lb. Victrola to lug around, found
one she really liked. I have to admit I loved it, too. So we swapped
(I had to add some cash, of course).
So we ended up buying for our 35th anniversary, a Standard Model
A Talking Machine (copyright 1901) made by the Standard Talking
Machine Company of Chicago made by Columbia (originally part of
Edison-Columbia in the 1880's and later merged with Gramophone in
about 1930). The horn is called a "petal horn". These machines
appreciate much more than Victrolas, so I was pleased. The sound is
really cool. Some of the talking machine or antique phonograph sites
have examples of different sounding machines that you can play on
your computer.
I attached a few pictures. The dog (I got that from him,too) is
an exact replica of "Nipper," the famous Victor "voice of his
master" dog.

If anyone is looking for some great antique phonographs (has
huge consoles,too) let me know, and I'll send you his email/telephone
number. He appears at a number of antique shows. I think his next big
one is the Roundtop, TX Antique Show between Houston and Austin in
late March/early April. This is a HUGE show with over 350,000 people
in attendance. We may even head that way, even though we are out
of room for any more collectibles or antiques. My cousin is still
holding an antique rocker and desk for me. Oh well, we can always
just look! (Yeah, right)

Boy, does that bring back memories! I remember the "girls prom"
was held in the girls Gym; refer to the '53 Columbian.
One of my favorite memories of the girls Gym was when we (my
friends... buddies) would go up the side stairs (see picture) and
pick the lock with a pocket knife... it was easy.

Now, this was on a weekend and no one is suppose to be there,
right? Well, you have to remember we had the "best" janitors in the
Northwest... remember Bill Hartley and Marcellina Seidel. They were
always there with a smile and there to keep our High School in the
best condition!! Anyway, to make a long story short, after we had
picked the lock to the girls Gym; we started playing basketball to
our hearts content. Being there alone made this huge echo in the Gym.
We were having a great time until Bill Hartley came in and asked us
to leave. Now, when Bill spoke you listened.. so we left. This didn't
stop us from going back on other weekends. Finally, one weekend we
got to the same doors and someone had put a metal plates over the
door latches. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted!! Grin!
Another thing I remember in between the boys and girls Gym during
lunch hour, we would toss coins and see who could get the closest to
the wall... the winner took all. This could be nickels, dimes, or
quarters... your choice. Great fun.

Columbia (Richland) High School. It sure brought back some great
memories.

Well, we had a nice turn out for John Richardson ('58) and our
class of '58 Luncheon on Sunday. We had John Richardson, Jim Smith,

Re: Vera Edwards...Still Going Strong At 85
Dear Bomber Buddies,
I'm very happy to announce that my Mom, Vera Edwards, is happy
and healthy in Spokane these days. You may remember that Vera taught
at Carmichael for years, and later transferred to Chief Jo, when
Rick ('62-RIP) and I began attending Carmichael. Later, she worked as
a K-12 school counselor for Hanford School (a somewhat traitorous
act, we Bombers agree). Mom continued to live in W. Richland long
after her teaching career, and Realtor career, until March of 2004.
Dad had passed away 5 years ago, and then we lost my Bro, Rick,
almost two years ago. Needless to say, our family is now tiny... and
we are just happy to finally be together in Spokane, where Mom lives
and serves as Vice President of the Resident's Council at Harbor
Crest, a lovely senior facility on the South Hill. Mom hasn't changed
much, folks. She's still tons of fun, with lots of attitude! The
great news is that she is going to be 85 on April 30th! I can just
imagine how much fun she would have with an album filled with jokes,
comments, and "roast style stories" from all of HER KIDS from her
school mom years. I'll supply the album and put it all together for
Vera... if you'd be kind enough to send the emails and/or photos of
yourself... to thrill and delight MY MOM.
Thanks in advance for any contribution you'd like to make to
MOM's Memory Album. By the way, she still talks about so many of you
all the time. She loves all of you so much, and so enjoys hearing
about each and every one of you!!! I hope you are all well, and
immensely happy in life.

Re: Am I my own Grandpa?
People often ask me if I was always this way? While silently
wondering what they could possibly be referring to, I generally
respond by saying, "NOoooooo, I used to be much worse." And this is
true. I believe that I am like the aging superhero, mellowing with
age much like "Super Glue" gradually turning to fine old "Silly
Putty." Recently, someone wrote into The Sandstorm and expressed
their disbelief at reaching the ripe old age of 60 years. Having
never expected to possibly survive past 25 or 30 years, I find that
I "myself" vividly resemble that remark. I am racing headlong and
uncontrollably toward the inter-decade level of 64 years this summer.
Just a few years ago, I used to get up in the morning and look into
the mirror and wonder, "Dad, what are you doing in there?" More
recently, I look in there and ask out loud, "Grandpa, when did you
come back?" Gramps was born on a wagon train traveling from Iowa to
Kansas in 1872 and he passed on yonder over life's great divide about
40 years ago. He was 92 years old. So, I have resigned myself to
being around for a bit longer than that original mere 30 years. Me
"Dear Ol' Mither" is almost 87 and my auntie is 92 years old and
Auntie is ornery enough to outlive me and my much younger sister,
Marilyn Swan Beddo ('63). And, a psychic friend once told me that
since I come from a stock with such great longevity, they (Ever
wonder who "they" is?) would have to shoot me to get rid of me. After
that, I have never sought a second opinion. I have decided, "Its a
good time, and I'm havin' it!" So, I plan to make the best of it.
Some folks stop to smell the roses. Well I do too and I also try to
participate in other benevolent undertakings like talk to and pet the
kitty cats. However, I have discovered that I must be more careful
when I bend over so that I don't keep on going and topple over on
my head. I have found that now, as a senior citizen it, is most
embarrassing to be stuck there in a three point stance on shaky legs
and a full (although thinning) head of gray with arms waving wildly
about somewhat reminiscent of a thick wobbly tripod. So, there I am
in the "bottoms up position" yelling, "Help, I've toppled and I can't
get up!" Of course, if I could just get down, then I could probably
get back up. But... Whoever coined that expression, "Keep the shiny
side up" may have had aging old men in mind because I still have
"most" of my silvery gray hair but it shines so much that I have to
keep a lid on it when hunting to avoid causing a wildlife stampede.
Anyway, every time I topple, one of the real values of having
resident elves becomes most apparent. They usually come along,
laughing uncontrollably and harness up Darby and pull me back
upright. Of course, Darby, is my Yellow Lab, who has been just
sitting there, up till then, thoroughly enjoying the apparent humor
of my situation and offering absolutely no help. Good elves, good
elves, Bad dog!

Wow!!! That took me back. I have often thought about Bill, but had
forgotten his name. Thank you, Wally. Bill Hartley was one of the most
pleasant gentlemen I have ever known... ready smile, good words for
everyone and everything. He was one of Richland's foremost sports
enthusiasts. His voice, rooting for the Bombers, could always be heard
at our baseball games. He knew every player's name and would call it out
to congratulate or to encourage. I had a number of opportunities to chat
with him. I found him to be a superb human being.

book?) I have read about the little people and their puddle environment
with interest and enjoyment. I don't recall any puddle comments

Hi all, Happy Valentine's Day early! I had to write in tonight
because hardly anyone wrote in today! Think if all the classes wrote
in how long the paper would be!!!!!
I had a wonderful day today with my daughter Bonnie and my
beautiful granddaughters, Sofia and Gabriella. What a joy they are!
My granddaughter Sofia went to church with her Mom and her Memaw and
talked through the whole service! What a blessing she is. Then we walked
in the park in downtown Bellevue in the beautiful sunny day and went for
a tall iced tea on downtown Main Street. Later we picked up Gabriella
and we drove to my Mom's house. Gabriella and I went for a walk together
while Bonnie visited with her Grandmother. Gabriella picked up rocks and
sticks and found some yellow chalk on the ground and walked on the edge
of the sidewalks and ran ahead of me and I found myself thinking that if
she ran away I would not be able to catch up with her!! We walked on the
track up from my Mom's house where my brother, Greg went to Jr. High and
where my Dad used to walk when he was retired.
What a wonderful experience to live as a child again through your
grandchildren. May God Bless all you reading this today as Ash Wednesday
comes again and the Lenten season begins again.
It is so wonderful to know that there are so many blessings in this
beautiful country and world of ours even though there is so much pain
and heartache for so many.

I have to share some very sad news.
JoAnne Bucholz McLaughlin's ('65) husband, Tom, died unexpectedly in his
sleep this weekend. He was only 56 years old. Tom was not a Bomber; but
he had lived here all his working life. He was a great guy. They had
recently built a new house in Pasco. The memorial service was Thursday,
February 10th.

Our mother, Inez Miller, is turning 90 on February 28th and we
thought it would be fun to have any ex-students send her a birthday
wish. She taught at Lewis and Clark in 1945 and 1946 (5th or 6th grade).
She then taught 6th grade at Spalding during the '47-'48 school year
and I think she taught a 1/2 day during the '48-'49 school year still
at Spalding. She took time off to be with kids and went to teaching 1/2
day kindergarten at Jason Lee in 1956. She went back to Spalding in
1957, teaching kindergarten there until she retired in 1977. I know for
sure the retirement date is correct, the other dates may be off by a
year or so.
She is doing great and had a complete knee replacement last year.
She is still active in Bridge clubs, P.E.O., church activities and
retired teachers association and keeps dad busy with household projects.
We would like to put a book together for her to present to her at
the "Tea Party" we are having for her on the 27th. Thought it would be
a fun walk down memory lane for her.

Re: Richland Seniors Association Dance
The Richland Seniors Association is co-sponsoring, with the City
of Richland, our Second Annual "All Ages" Winter Swing Fling Dance on
Saturday, February 12th from 1:00 - 4:00pm. Tickets are $5 at the door,
the Easy Swing Band will play your type of music, great refreshments are
being provided by The Manor at Canyon Lakes, many nice door prizes will
be given out and the first 25 ladies will receive a keep-sake corsage.
We had more than 120 people last year at the first one, and we hope to
have even more this time. Please come and join us!
And on Sunday, February 13th from 8:00 - 12:00 noon the RSA
(Richland Seniors Association), the City of Richland and the Wishing
Star Foundation are having a pancake breakfast at the Community Center.
For $4 at the door you will receive sausage, scrambled eggs, all-you-
can-eat pancakes, juice and coffee. Door prizes are always given away
and entertainment will be provided. Please come and help the Foundation

I remember both Bill Harley's, Senior and Junior. Junior was, I
believe, was in my class of 1956 and the last time I saw him he was
working for one of the major banks in Uptown. He was a super guy and a
great classmate, which shows what great parents he had.
One time I did something stupid, which was par for the course, and
Bill, Sr. chewed me out good. Yes, he could do that if he wanted to but
I don't think it was very often. I told my parents about it and my Dad
said, "You must have really screwed up to get Bill, Sr. mad at you?" I
told him what I did, waiting to get jumped on by my Dad and he surprised
me by saying, "Getting chewed out by Bill, Sr. is punishment enough." A
couple of days later, after dodging Bill, Sr. all of that time, he came
up and put his arm around me, and asked me if I had learned a lesson?
Good military training because I said "YES SIR" and we were friends for
life... again.
Later, a Kennewick friend of mine said of Bill, Sr. "...he is just
your school janitor..." and I said that he was more than that... he
was my friend and so was his son and I could not say that about a lot
of professionals I knew around town.
I also remember being in the Mitsubishi Industries Head Office in
Japan, probably 3,000 employees in the HQ, to meet with the President
and had to wait because he was out meeting and talking to the janitors
of the building. He was telling them that their job was SO important
because the Mitsubishi building represented the Mitsubishi quality and
that quality started with "their job and their the most important in the
company because the cleanliness of the building represented the quality
of the company." Lesson learned, but not on Enron and MCI.

mountains. Guess I will have to learn to drink my Scotch neat.

transportation?" Jim, you really have my attention. You see, I am a
curious sort of fellow and people tell me that all the time. Hmmm.
Wonder if they mean that in a different way? Oh well, your question
reminded me of an incident. Anymore, at my age, everything seems to
remind me of an incident.
Way back in the early eighties (last century), I had a fisheries
project in which I had to locate all water withdrawals (pumps, siphons,
diversions, etc.) on large portions of the Snake and Columbia Rivers.
Next, we performed a diving inspection on each one to determine if there
was adequate screening protection for downstream migrating juvenile
salmon and steelhead. Some of these dives were little more than laying
in the water and looking at the end of a pipe, others were fairly deep
(30-40 feet). The final step was to determine and locate the owners and
operators of the withdrawals and ensure that the fish protection was
within an established criteria. Prior to that, anyone could pump out of
the river with whatever and believe me the "whatevers" were amazing and
often intriguing and ingenious.
One day I went ashore from my boat into an orchard just downstream
of Wenatchee, WA and approached a fellow who was barely taller than your
average elf. I cordially greeted him, he responded in kind, and I asked
him who owned the pumps there. He replied, "Seddarguen." I said, "who?"
He again said, "Seddarguen." Puzzled, I said, "I'm sorry, who did you
say is the owner?" Growing somewhat perturbed with me, he exhorted
rather loudly (for a little fellow), "Ah said, Seddarguen, cain't yah
unnerstann Anglieesh?" Barely controlling my amusement, I said, "Oh, OK,
where are you from?" He said that he hailed from somewhere in the deep
south and we chatted for a while about how good the fishing was from his
shoreline. I bid him adieu and went on (chuckling inwardly). Later, my
partner, Tommy, and I had a good laugh when we determined that
"Seddarguen" actually translated to "Cedar Green," a combined local
fruit orchard and I think a fruit processing company in those days.
So, Jim, what is a "Natter Jack?" As a "medium of transportation"
could explain so much about the wee people. "Nater Jack" just seems to
ring with a similar connotation of "Seddarguen." Color me totally
curious. Please elaborate? And, be well my fellow Bomber.

went to the hand doctor this morning(2-11-05)about my carpal tunnel and
he said what I did NOT want to hear----he is scheduling nerve conduction
tests on BOTH hands----NOT at all what I want----first time I had it
done, it hurt so damn much that the doctor could only do one hand cause
I was in too much stress and he was worried I was gonna have a seizure
(they can be brought on by stress), so you can well-imagine how my
stress level was just hearing he is ordering the tests!!!!! he also
talked about cortisone injections and I nixed those right away---of
course he said, "I only use a small needle and it won't hurt"---well, I
NEED more than his say-so that it won't hurt!!!!!!! have heard way too
many horror stories about cortisone!!!!! will have the tests sometime
in the next two weeks, then will go back and get the results and IF
they aren't bad enough for surgery, he will "push" the cortisone
injections!!!!!!! I am leaning towards paying for the surgery, IF my
insurance won't pay for it, as I don't think cortisone is going to do
much--it isn't a cure----just a "stop-gap" and I ain't into all that
pain!!!!!!! got on "the net" and found information on the types of
surgeries for carpal tunnel---IF I have to pay for it on my own, then
I am opting for the "cold-laser" technique----luckily, there are FIVE
doctors here in Bakersfield who are qualified to do that type of
surgery! "three cheers for my side".

clear and sunny skies this afternoon----am driving to Las Vegas
later this evening, where they are having lots of rain and street
flooding---hate driving through the desert in the rain.

Your 2/12/05 response to my use of the term "Natter Jacks" included
an adventure account which I enjoyed immensely. I read about the term
only once and for the life of me can't recall where. The thumbnail
comment stated that a "Natter Jack" is an amphibian, closely akin to a
frog or toad. The venue of the story was a large pond in the backwoods
of a southern state. Two boys were scratching around the edge of the
pond looking for a place to fish. One of the boys pointed at this
toad/frog/thing and worked a phrase "..that sleepy, old, natter jack.."
into the conversation. Since your Sandstorm postings have revealed that
you are a fisherman, outdoors-man, adventurer, elf confidant, etc. - not
to mention a now renown puddle owner - I figured a reference to natter
jacks would comfortably fit into your narrative scheme... some place. I
thought you would be far more familiar with the term than I am.

dated 1945-1948). I love the book because it not only shows some of the
history of Richland in those days, but it's funny! It really brings back
memories of the way it was during those times for our families and at
the work place. My sister Sue ('59) bought my book for me as a gift.
It's fun to sit back and reminisce! Dick Donnell's son Jim (James)

Linda, Linda, Linda. I just have to "stick"-up for cortisone
injections (even though I know you've made your decision). I have them
in my lower spine, as often as they let me -- 3 or 4 a year. First, they
gradually induce anesthetic which, unless my spine is really, really
inflamed, I don't even feel (if it is inflamed, I just give one short
yelp). I have never felt the needle for the injection, itself. All this
is done under fluroscope and I, though they don't recommend it, drive
myself home feeling fine. Good luck with your surgery -- and hope your
insurance does its job.

Linda Reining ('64) wrote that she was having a Nerve Conduction
Test done on her wrist. I just had it done on both legs and my back,
both the velocity study and the needle sticking (whatever they call
that).
If that test is ever mentioned again I am running for cover as fast
as I can. I told the Therapist that was doing the study that I was sure
that these tests were outlawed in the Geneva Convention.
Anyway, they found that I have a significant nerve deterioration in
both legs and some damage to the spinal column that appears to be trying
to heal itself. Hopefully now they can start doing something to relieve
my general low level pain in my legs. Would not do it again though.

Really can relate to your apprehension about surgery but you know
they can do so much more with carpel tunnel today than they used to. The
sooner you have it done the better the results. The results are mostly
always better when they don't put it off. I have had two rotator cuff
surgeries and the one that I have had the most problems with they waited

Congratulations to Wayne Wallace ('50) & Elva McGhan Wallace ('50) - Wow
- 50 years. I met Wayne during "the folding of the Club 40 paper." I have
known Elva too many years to mention (she used to work in the mail room
in 700 Area while I worked in Purchasing (G.E.) across the hall).
When I feel down in the dumps I get out my Dupus Boomer book and laugh
and remember all that stuff. Remember the article Don L wrote about
planting grass and I forgotten how many bottles of beer. By the way,
CREHST has combined the two books into one and they sell for about $10
(I think).
Linda Reining ('64): I have had one cortisone shot for my back (which did
not do any good) and have to go back for another one in a month or so.
You can only have one shot every 3 months. For those of you who don't
know - cortisone eats up your white blood cells (that helps to fight off
infections) if you take too much. It is also highly addictive and takes
a while to come down. But if you are in pain you try most anything. The
doctor told me he prefers not to operate on my back. I have two knee
replacements and dental implants - and 9 operations in the past 7 years.
I'm not ready for any more surgery.

I heard much talk about other teachers at Col-Hi, but I hadn't heard any
talk about Gifford Jones, the chemistry teacher. I liked Mr. Jones. He
would do some stupid stuff sometimes, but I did like him and I learned a
lot about chemistry. The stupid stuff, and we all do it, was the time he
was explaining the Bunsen burner. As he demonstrating how to use it, he
leaned over and caught his tie of fire.
Do any of you remember when he asked Brad Cutshall ('51-RIP) what he
bought when he bought a load of fertilizer and Brad told him a load of
s---? Or when we were manufacturing hydrogen gas and Richard Gibson ('51)
filled a large beaker with zinc and topped it off with HCL? He then put a

scared the stuff Brad was talking about when you buy a load of fertilizer
out of all of us, including Mr. Jones. Mr. Jones made my first year in
chem at WSU easy.
Other teacher's names I have thought about are, Walt LaPage, Miss or Mrs.
Brown, English teacher, a real hot number, Mr. Requwa(?), Miss
Carmichael, another goodie, Mr. Baker, Principal, Mr. Chisem, ass't
Principal, Nadine Brown, English, and Rish and Dawald. What a great bunch
of teachers. Oh, yes, Mrs. Dieghton(?) library and Janse, crafts.

Just want to share a happy week with everyone who has ever had any
contact with our military. Happy to report that my grandson with the
737th Transportation Company came home from Iraq on the 5th of February
and today we went to Yakima to the welcoming ceremony. We were lucky
enough to go to Ft. Lewis last weekend to see him also.
They had a short but heartwarming greeting today and ACES (thank you
Norma Myrick Nunamaker ('54), for all you do for our troops) were among
the people welcoming them home. Thank heavens all came home, some with a
few injuries, but they ALL came home! 15 purple hearts will be awarded
and a lot of other medals to many of the unit. My grandson will get a
bronze star and was promoted to Staff Sgt. while in Iraq and Kuwait.
We are just so thankful he was able to come home to his wife, my
granddaughter and 2 little sons. After hearing some of the scary stories,
I just pray that all of the troops still there can be as fortunate.
Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.

Re: Aches and Pains
It is a common problem that all of us Bomber alumni are growing older
by the day. As our bodies age all kinds of aches, pains, and a variety of
ills create more and more difficulties. Coping with them can be anything
from a "piece of cake" to a nightmare.
I have to side with Linda Reining ('64), Tom Hughes ('56) and others
who have expressed problems and fear of solutions. Sometimes we just have
to decide to live with it the best we can. I had a nerve conduction test
on my back and quit halfway through it. I would never submit to that
again. Back in the early '60s Dr. Richard Petty saved both of my
daughters a lifetime of problems by straightening their feet at the age
of one year old. While I was watching him fit the splint bar on the
youngest he noticed the way I was standing and had the nurse make me an
appointment. Short version is that I have a left leg shorter then the
right and my pelvis rides at the wrong angle in two directions. I wore a
lift on the sole of my shoe for several years but it made me walk funny.
(if you remember the funny gait of Charlie Chaplin?) So I quit wearing
them. I am fortunate to have had a great Chiropractor for the last 18
years who gives me a tune-up 2-3 times a year and I do Ok.
I had cortisone injections in my shoulder twice, and will never allow
it again. The first time hurt like hell, but did a little good. The
second time was nothing more then torture. The pain was extreme and
lasted several weeks. So, on my good days I do as I want, but cutting
back my activity when I feel that message from my back. I enjoy life too
much to let it hold me down.
This is not to criticize medical science and it's practitioners, they
have done some great things. But each of us should have our own decisions
about treatments and their worth to ourselves. We are the ones who have
to live with it.
I am off to Lake Havasu, AZ this week for WinterBlast, the pyros
version of "spring break". It has been raining buckets there, so we will
have to take measures to keep our powder dry. However next Fri, Sat, and
Sun nights will have some great fireworks if any of you are in that area.
They will be at the SARA raceway park So of the city. Next Monday I will
run down to Yuma and spend a few hours with Gus Keeney ('57) before
climbing on a plane for home.
A bit of family news... My son Jason, wife Virginia, and my
granddaughter Victoria are coming over from So CA for next weekend. I
haven't seen them in a couple of years so I am anxious. And another
granddaughter Jessica in Phoenix is a finalist for a full ride
scholarship to a chef's school in France. If she doesn't get it she has
been told she will get one here in the US. These are 3 year programs so
she should be quite competent in something she loves to do.

Since I closely follow the Puddle Elves saga, Jim's reference to
Natterjacks piqued my curiosity so I went to Google which took me to
several articles and pictures and it's described as an endangered toad.
That was enough for me, it's a pretty creature, but, if you're
interested, there's more.
The Puddle must have thawed in the last few days of beautiful spring
weather we've had, Pappy, so take a look at the pictures and keep your
eyes open. There just may be Natterjacks at the Puddle and they do seem
like an ideal form of transportation for Puddle-dwelling elves.
They have a yellow strip down their backs (just a quirk of nature,
I'm sure, no reflection on their courage) and that thing on their throat
that they inflate to croak and court, I think, is robin's egg blue. They
run instead of hop, so, I know that if I were an elf, that's the kind of
transportation I'd like to have.

We had a great "All Ages" Winter Swing Fling Dance at the Richland
Community Center on Saturday with about 80 people there. The Easy Swing
Band played, great refreshments were furnished by the Manor at Canyon
Lakes, door prizes, and entertainment by the "Quorum," a group from the
Columbia River Chordsmen. Sorry you missed it!
However, you can have a second chance--Friday, February 18th from 1:00 -
4:00 we will be having our regular third Friday dance at the Center with
the Easy Swing Band. Tickets are $4 at the door (children under 12 are
free), and all ages are always invited and refreshments are always
served. Pre-packaged finger foods are welcome but never required. Even
if you don't dance it is fun to watch and listen and visit. Hope you can
join us!

Just wanted to pass a quick note that today (Valentine's Day) is my
mother's (Mardelle Scott) 87th birthday. She came to Richland in 1945
from Spokane after marrying my father, Harold. Upon alighting from the
train in Pasco, she looked around the bleak countryside and told him,
"I'll stay six months. Find another job." Neither of them ever left. She
worked at Hanford for about 12 years, all for Vitro Engineers, I think.
Sixty years after her arrival, she is still in the Tri-Cities, living in
a home for seniors in Kennewick. So happy birthday, Mom! And thanks for
sticking it out through the dusty, windy early years of Richland,
allowing me and my sisters to grow up in a special and wonderful
environment.

I apologize for taking so long to report on my request for info about
Mr. Warren Scott, Col-Hi teacher, but I was distracted by other projects.
Anyhow, Susan Erickson Kuntz ('59) was kind enough to dig out his obituary
from the Wenatchee paper and send it on to me. I'm sure that some of
you, like me, who considered him one of your favorite teachers, will be
interested. I know he instilled in me a desire to pursue a Physics Major
in college (it only took 2 quarters at the U of W to convince me that was
a big mistake!).
First, he apparently taught High School in Thorp, WA before coming to
Richland. From the Columbians, I learned that he started at Col-Hi as a
General Science teacher with the Class of '53 and progressively added
Biology & Photography (one of his life-long hobbies) to his repertoire
before purely teaching Physics. He apparently left Col-Hi after the Class
of '62 (guys like John Adkins ('62) probably drove him out).
After leaving Col-Hi, he taught at Big Bend Community College in
Moses Lake and retired from Wenatchee Valley College in 1988.
He passed away January 4, 2003, in Hilo, Hawaii, at the age of 79.

Hello Bombers!! As one of three brothers of basketball privilege at RHS:
two 3rds and one 2nd at state------we are humbled at the retirement of
the Art Dawald Gym!! I remember the days of a scared, scrawny sophomore
in the gym playing before a capacity crowd before halftime in the J.V.
game. Believe me it prepared me for state, district and games against
Wapato, Pasco and Spokane. And you're right-----the floor did vibrate and
move with the crowd. It was the absolute best playing court---bar none!!
I used to go to all of the games while in grade school! C.W. ('58) &
Norris ('57) Brown, John Meyers ('58-RIP), Jim Walton ('60), Bob Frick ('60),

To all of you who wrote to me privately and in The Sandstorm concerning
the fascinating phenomenon of "Natter Jacks," please allow me a rain check
and I will get back to you, soon. My step-son, John Scott Goodrich (my
wife Jeanne's oldest son), passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack
in Wenatchee, WA at the very young age of 48 years. I am still wrestling
with why the younger ones in our family keep passing while we older
ones just keep on keepin' on? Not complaining mind you, just trying to
understand it. And, to all who learned of this and have expressed your
condolence, we thank you. In times like this, one finds that puddles,
even frozen puddles, make really good special places for meditation.

Re: Death notice of Tony Marsh ('75)
After reading Tony's obituary in the Sandstorm this morning I went
to see his mother this afternoon. We were neighbors on Birch in the '50s.
Kept contact off and on through the years after I left Richland. His
sister Mary Marsh ('56) greeted me at the door. I was saddened to find
that Pauline, Tony's mother died four days later. There will be a
memorial service on the 26th of February for both Tony and Pauline. The
announcement for the memorial will be in the Tri-City Herald next week.
Mary and I visited for a while catching up after all the years. She
is in good spirits after all that has happened. Gave Mary the Richland
High School website and she will be checking into the Sandstorm soon.
The beautiful tree in front of the Marsh's home captivated Mary and
I into looking back more through the years as I was leaving. There is a
picture of Mary, my brother Joe Jones Winterhawk ('58) and myself playing
with Mary's turtle in the "Image of America Richland Washington book.
There are no trees. We are sitting where the big beautiful tree is now.
Fascinating to stand under such beautiful trees after all of these years.
Who would have thought so many years later our neighborhoods would have
such great trees to come home to and share such wonderful memories. The
tree is approximately 55 years old. The tree in the yard where I lived is
about the same age. Not quite as magnificent as the one in Pauline's
yard.
Mary's mother Pauline was friends with the lady who lives where my
family did on Birch. Mary is going to make sure I meet her and possibly
get a tour of the home. Then I will really be stepping back in time.

Is there place to go in the Bomber website to find all the
information about getting tickets for the party on the 19th of March
at the gym. Several Bombers have asked me and I haven't had enough
information to know. I think I have read there are two different places
to get them. One of those I should have written it down.

Bomber Tears and Have Fun

place of the past that I want to go explore. Mostly comes from
conversations with Bombers. Awakened memories are great. Soon I
will be going to Hat Rock or driving up to the Pot Holes. Might
even be fishing soon. Who knows. So much to do in Eastern Washington
in the outdoors. Done the mountains now time for the desert again.

bit early... It was our first 'bomb scare!' Five or six of us 'hustled
past the Chief Jo Apartments (Stilt City) headed towards Jefferson Grade

brought Ken Gray ('64-RIP) and one or two others to believe the Russians
were taking a 'shot over our bow' with a nuclear weapon. Instead...
someone had decided 'he' did not want to take a test that day and this
was the easiest way out.

2/15/05, and brought a copy of the Tri-City Herald. In it was a nice
story with the sad news about Howard Chitty's passing on 2/14/05. My
sincere condolences to his family, especially Alpha Delta Pi sorority
sisters Helen-Louise, Bonnie and Cindy.
In the same section was a picture of the owner of the Spudnut Shop,
al Ghirardo Driver ('72), being serenaded but Sweet Adelines, including

Thanks for the additional info on the March 19 event.
I attended a meeting in Seattle many years ago when the instructor asked
me where I was from. Told her Richland and she said, "Oh, that's where
those match stick houses are located." That's what I called them until
they were remodeled.
Does anyone from the class of '49 remember when the fire alarm went off
just before our graduation ceremony? Someone must have been bored that
night or wanted to stir up some excitement.

It's very likely that I dug the 2 ft cube planting hole.
I can't remember if it was November '49 or '50 but I do remember
going door to door with a shovel on my shoulder offering to dig their
tree holes for a dollar each. Very few people declined.
I lived at 402 Cottonwood (which was essentially the SW corner of
the Ranch types in those days) and worked the entire Ranch type area to
Cottonwood & Lee Blvd. I remember getting east as far as Lee & Sanford.
Where did all that industriousness go?

60 today. They've been gone for 10 years now, but there aren't many days
that go by, when I don't think of the Chipmunks. They are permanently

Bomber Nation. I'm certain I'm not alone in wanting to wish them a Happy
Birthday.
During their last years, our worst days were a whole lot better than
their best days. Their courage made all of us who loved them better

Re: Vera Edwards...Still Going Strong At 85
Dear Bomber Buddies,
I'm very happy to announce that my Mom, Vera Edwards, is happy
and healthy in Spokane these days. You may remember that Vera taught
at Carmichael for years, and later transferred to Chief Jo, when
Rick ('62-RIP) and I began attending Carmichael. Later, she worked as
a K-12 school counselor for Hanford School (a somewhat traitorous
act, we Bombers agree). Mom continued to live in W. Richland long
after her teaching career, and Realtor career, until March of 2004.
Dad had passed away 5 years ago, and then we lost my Bro, Rick,
almost two years ago. Needless to say, our family is now tiny... and
we are just happy to finally be together in Spokane, where Mom lives
and serves as Vice President of the Resident's Council at Harbor
Crest, a lovely senior facility on the South Hill. Mom hasn't changed
much, folks. She's still tons of fun, with lots of attitude! The
great news is that she is going to be 85 on April 30th! I can just
imagine how much fun she would have with an album filled with jokes,
comments, and "roast style stories" from all of HER KIDS from her
school mom years. I'll supply the album and put it all together for
Vera... if you'd be kind enough to send the emails and/or photos of
yourself... to thrill and delight MY MOM.
Thanks in advance for any contribution you'd like to make to
MOM's Memory Album. By the way, she still talks about so many of you
all the time. She loves all of you so much, and so enjoys hearing
about each and every one of you!!! I hope you are all well, and

About three Bomber-Babes having birthdays on the 19th? It is a true
story... one which I am sure you will find hard to believe. The first
chickie was one of "our" girls. That is the girls we got to troll for
when we were Jrs and they were Sophs. We weren't great at it... even tho
Jimbeaux et al., did their best to teach us the fine art... I think
Warford ('65) had mastered it by 2d grade but that's cuz he had big
brother Charlie (aka "Charles") ('61) to teach him the finer points...
soooooooooooooo anyway... this girl from the class of '66 is having her
birthday on Saturday the 19th. Along with the '66er, two other Bomber-
Babes will be celebrating... now I could go on and on about what fine
babes these are... (maybe if I was... oh 20... 30... OK... 40 years
younger I would) but their Daddy is from my class and he is MUCH bigger
than I am... in fact, one night when Pops and I were Srs low these many
years ago these girls' dad helped me out in a fight at a party one of the
'66er girls was throwing... I say fight... what it was -- was this boxer
had me down between two parked cars and was rearranging my face with his
fists... it had not been a particularly enjoyable night as Tony Harrah
('65) and I had passed a car on the right and the other car decided to
turn right... and you guessed it... Tony left the left front fender of
his Yellow V-Dub in the middle of the road over by the roller rink...
then we had to convince these guys it was their fault for having the
wrong blinker on... so... these girls' dad kicked the boxer out in the
middle of the road to get him off me and he went sprawling into the snow
and was almost hit by one of the police cars that was arriving on the
scene... needless to say... we beat it outa there!

Today as I was driving down the freeway I heard Gary Crow's ('65)
radio program announced and it brought back memories of my speech class
at Carmichael Jr. High. I was giving a speech (I hated giving speeches)
and Gary was in the back row holding up a sign and making crazy faces at
me (the teacher was looking down) and I started laughing uncontrollably
and of course did not get a good grade on my speech!
Gary never got caught!! I always did!! Who else remembers Gary Crow
antics in school?! He sure kept us rolling in the isles!

Re: The Ernie Curtis Playground
On Saturday, March 5th at 10:00 a.m. the City of Richland will be
dedicating the children's play area at Columbia Point as the Ernie Curtis
Playground, after my father the former Recreation Director for the city.
Dad passed away a little over a year ago and my family is very grateful
(if not a bit humbled) for the recognition shown by Richland's civic
leadership of his contributions to the community over the years.
The Ernie Curtis Playground will be a place where children and
their families can spend many enjoyable hours in the years to come. In
remembering my father's total commitment to the youth of Richland in the
'50s, '60s and '70s I can think of no more appropriate memorial to all
that he stood for. I would like to believe that Dad will always be
somewhere nearby having as much fun as the kids.
We ask that all those who are able and wish to, would join us at this

I did not know your father through his work for the city. Congratulations
on the park.
We brought out to Richland, with our furniture, a 2000-pound player
piano. Uncle Sam used to come out to your house about every other
year and inspect the house. My father happened to be at home when the
inspector came. He called my father down to the basement and told him to
look at the floor in the front room (had to go up into the dirt) and said
to my father, "Look." The front room floor was like a swayback mule. My
mother was one of those people who did not like for the furniture to stay
in one place more than 2 weeks. She used to rearrange the furniture -
including that 2000-pound piano. She had moved that piano so much that
the soft wood floors were grooved. The inspector told my father he had to
get rid of the piano and my dad sold it to your dad for $40 - I cried -
we had owned that piano for better than 10 years - it still had some
rolls with it and a bench. Our neighbor used to come over and play the
piano and she was a good piano player.
My mother got overly ambitious one day and moved the piano and knocked a
hole in the wall and we had to call Housing to come and repair the wall.
Good ole Housing!!!
When duPont left they bought our moving contract and because we brought
out a 2000-pound piano we received a lot more money than the people who
came out here with us from the same small town in Ohio.
Hope everyone had a nice President's Day. Do you suppose our grandchildren
(and great grandchildren) know when Abraham Lincoln and George Washington
were born? Or who they were? If you have not seen Mt. Rushmore - you
should try to see it. One of the few things that I call awesome.

I don't remember the piano, but I probably did see it one of the
times I was in your house. When I went to work after high school, I
bought a piano and put it in Mom's house. We all played it. My brother
Terry Anderson wanted to learn to play but he wouldn't practice was more
interested in BASEBALL.
You're right! Mt. Rushmore is awesome! On our travels as a military
family, we manage to see a lot of our country's natural and man made
wonders. Two that stick out in my mind are the Statue of Liberty and the
Lincoln Memorial at night. Talk about awesome!!

Hello Bombers. Just wanted to recant a beautiful walk through Howard Amon
Park this past Saturday with wife Ruth and pug Stanley. A brisk sunny
morning, the air calm as we headed north from the Hampton Inn. Several
hundred yards we look up and see a huge juvenile bald eagle in one of the
trees past the fingernail. We ran into friends who were walking a black
and golden lab. We marveled at the beauty of the day and the eagle and it
all reminded me of why this place is so magical. For those who still live
here, take a walk some weekend morning along the Columbia and enjoy the
wonderful community that even after all these years displays its charm
with nature.

There are so many things that are awesome (a word I don't use too
much) in our country: Niagara Falls (and I am terrified of water), Grand
Canyon National Park (NP), the large Sequoia Trees (makes you feel like a
SMALL ant), our own Mt. Rainier NP, Grand Coulee Dam, the rain forest in
Olympic NP, etc. The list is endless. I had hoped at one time to visit
all the National Parks but they keep adding new ones so will not make it.
I have postcards from the more established NPs but none of the new ones.
We have, I think, 54 NPs. Clinton made two just before he left office.
Try them - you will like them. I've only been to Washington DC once and
my cousin took me to Gettysburg, Arlington (my ex is buried there - he
was in the Korean War, Vietnam 3 times) and the Marjorie Merryweather
Post house. Her closet was as big as my entire house (I was living in a
2-bedroom prefab at the time).

Even though I am scared to death of water when I get in a deep
depression I always go down to the Park (Howard Amon) and walk along the
river. It seems to be very soothing - especially in the early morning
hours. When I worked out in the area (100-N) I went walking each day at
lunch time and walked down to the river. It changed personalities each
day - some days it would be a beautiful blue, during flood stage it would
be a dirty brown, on days that the wind blew it would have beautiful
white caps, some days when it was stormy it would be a grayish color and
make waves.

Happy anniversary!!! Back in 1950 when Jack was, among other things,
a member of the Bomber baseball team, we played a night game at the
Tri-City Braves park. Jack nailed a pitch from Kennewick's Olsen which
cleared the center field wall by a mile. It was a prodigious blast
by a sophomore who could hit the ball as hard as a pro. Small wonder,
really... Jack was about eight axe-handles across the shoulders with big,
powerful hands and forearms. Often wondered how he did as a junior and
senior. We all know how well he did in the marriage department.
Footnote to the Kennewick game. Had I not picked up a slow roller down
the first base line and thrown it - under-handed - over Jack's head (at
first base) far out into the right field corner, my 2-hitter would have
been a shutout. We won 9-2. Forgive me, Jack?

Re: American Sights
Several people have mentioned some of the sights to be seen across
our great country. In 1987 my wife, Agnes and I took a trip around the
United States. Our Granddaughter, Jessica was 4 1/2 years old and we took
her with us. We drove across I-90 from Seattle to Boston, down the east
coast to Orlando, Florida and Disney World then up through Arkansas,
Oklahoma and Texas to Las Vegas, Nevada. From there back to Seattle. 9100
miles in three weeks. Jessica loved every bit of it. About a year later
I asked her if she remembered the trip and what did she remember. The
three things that she could remember were: The lady in the water holding
the fire (Statue of Liberty), the broken bell (the Liberty Bell) and
Lincoln's Memorial in Washington. These thing she remembered over Disney
World and all of the other things we had seen. I was surprised that these
things were that memorable to a learning-challenged 4 1/2 year old.

snatched during our sophomore year by one of the Carmichael trained
trolling masters from the class of '63... I can see him now... stalking
the narrow hallways of the school before they decided to tear it down
around our ears... (much as I hear they are doing again... tho I am sure
the new design is far superior to the one they built around us... that's
a plug Brian ('65)... yup... there he was in his weejuns or his wingtips
(memory fades a bit)... tho it coulda been black converse with white sox
on any given day... Since the Pookster ('63) appears in converse in his
best dancer picture it would seem that Mr. Harrah ('65) had brought their
coolness to the Richland city limits via Portland by that time... so the
point of all this is to keep our memories green even if our bods are not
in the shape they once were... (the birthday girl excepted of course)...
so before we even had the chance to say "wanna dance the next slow
dance" to this chick at a mixer... the king of trolling had swept her
off her feet... well not literally... I mean geeeeeeeez this was 1963
remember... and our loss was his gain... so a huge
BOMBER HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the ever young and lovely

Re: Mt Rushmore
My pal, Joan Okrent was raised in New York City. She did not have to
own a car until she moved to Washington State as an adult. She said she
would like to take her car and drive through the western states with me.
We visited my cousins on ranches in Wyoming and a farm in Neb. When we
arrived at Mt. Rushmore, we checked into a motel in a close town.
We drove the winding road to see the evening show. After we went down
the stairs under the faces of Mt. Rushmore, it started to rain, thunder,
and we had lightning. The band said they could not play because the
lightning would hit their instruments. We stayed to the very end of the
program. When we sang (in the pouring rain) "when the rockets red glare"
the lightning streaks would hit the faces on the rock. "the bombs
bursting in air" the thunder would shake the hills. Every time we sing
this song or hear it played, we remember the Presidents looking down on
us and the thunder and lightning.

I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your Kentucky language. I
had almost forgotten "tolerable". Being from East Tennessee just south of
the Kentucky border, I think we speak the same language!!
I call my friend of 70 years (met her when I was 4) every weekend,
and the last time I talked to her, she mentioned that she had been to the
Farside Restaurant.
Now this place I am from doesn't have that many restaurants and my
mind was trying to compute the Farside one. Pretty soon it dawned on me
that she was saying the Fireside Restaurant.
Luckily I didn't ask her what she was saying as she has mentioned
that I have turned into a Yankee. Horrors!

Re: US of A landmarks
In 1970 my husband Darrell (NAB) retired from the Air Force. And we
had a tent trailer and a big Chrysler Town and Country and a fishing boat
on top and off we went for a 2 1/2 month vacation. We spent 2 weeks
camped in Virginia close to D.C. where we saw so many things: Washington
monument, the National Museum, Lincoln's memorial, the White House tour,
visited our congressman at the time (some of you may remember Catherine
May. She treated us like royalty.) Couldn't get in to see Senator Jackson
as he was out. Went shopping downtown and bought myself the cutest hat!
Just HAD to put that in there. Went to the unknown soldier's grave and
Arlington (Darrell has an uncle buried there so took picture of his grave
for his aunt as she hadn't seen it.) He was a 2 star general in the Army
Air Corps. Well, enough of that. We went Gettysburg and spent the day and
New York City. Stayed on the Jersey side and took the bus to New York
each day. Couldn't get tickets for a play but strolled down Broadway and
read the marquees, stayed till the lights went on... what a sight! Saw
lots more in New York. From there we headed for Canada and traveled the
Transcanada Highway across that country and then home to Kennewick where
my Dad was living. I've seen several national parks and Niagara Falls,
Grand Canyon, San Francisco's landmarks and Los Angeles. I've lived near
a few large cities (within an hour or two drive). Two years ago we went
to San Diego. It was my first time, but my husband went to high school
there at Brown Military School, after graduation he went into the Navy and
basic training there. Of all the places I've lived and visited around
the country, after Puget Sound and Seattle I would definitely choose San
Diego.
Wow, I didn't mean to write so much. I have probably bored everyone
to death with my travels.

My retirement dream is to also visit all the national parks. I was
actually lucky enough to live and work at both Grand Canyon and Death
Valley. During that time on vacations we would rent a motor home and
traveled the entire west visiting friends and the national parks. Now
that I'm living in the southeast, I'm enjoying the parks in this area. In
only four years (just doesn't seem possible!) I will retire, buy my own
motor home and start following the sun! Am really looking forward to
seeing the northeast part of the country. My favorite park so far is Mesa
Verde... unbelievable!
As a side note, when my daughter was 12, we moved to the "back
country" of San Diego county. As we came around the final corner to our
new home, January looked up on the hill at a beautiful adobe home, and
said, "OH NO! Not another museum! You tricked me!" We later became good
friends with the folks who owned the home, and they absolutely loved that
story as they had built their home around a museum design they had seen
in Arizona.
Speaking of museums, we recently visited the Anne Frank exhibit in
Kennesaw and if any of you are visiting the Atlanta area... it is a truly
wrenching experience. Makes me realize once again... how lucky we are!

The Yakima Herald Republic named the 1965 Davis Pirates their team of
the century. The article is in the February 22nd edition of the paper. I
remember them as being real good. Wierman and Allen were the names that
stand out and the rest of the team was good. Jackie Brown was a sophomore
and would play football at Stanford. They went 25-0.
The 2005 Bombers play Friday at Pasco for regional seeding. I have
seen most of the games and they are getting better and are more fun to
watch.

To: Carol Black Foster ('48) - When I first came to Richland I became
friends with a gal from Minnesota. She was always telling me that I did
not pronounce things correctly: far for fire, tar for tire, dish rag for
tea towel, etc. The list was endless. So, as the old sayin' goes, "When
in Rome do as the Romans do." As I get older I seem to be reverting to my
childhood and sayin' those things again and again. I went back to Ohio
and Kentucky in 2000. My youngest daughter called me at my cousin's house
and she said: "Mom - go home - you are beginning to sound just like those
people." We used to visit Kentucky during the World War II. Everything
was rationed and they used to talk about how many pints they had to buy
things (points). I had to take speech lessons after I had my teeth pulled
at 18. The speech therapist not only got rid of my southern accent but
also my cleft palate speech. When I went back to Ohio everyone told me I
was putting on the dog by saying Washington instead of Warshington. Told
all of them that as far as I could see there was no R in Washington.
As my great grandmother used to say: Rememances: My sister and I were
talking over the holidays about things we remembered. Does anyone
remember when crackers came in sheets instead of individual crackers?
Made it a lot easier when you had to put a rolling pen over them for
crushed crackers.
To Susan Anderson Shattuck ('49): Envy you all of your travels. I have
done a lot of travelling in the US but only three trips out of the US. Our
land is not too bad.
To Vernita Edwards Loveridge ('65): Have you bought one of the passport
books from the National Parks? It is a small black book that has space
for each park to stamp. I have several places stamped. You can also, each

Larry Harrold ('56) and I have tried to visit some of our National
Parks out west using our truck and camper-a great way to see the country.
Last April we traveled to Utah and Western Colorado to see Canyonlands
NP, Arches National Monument, Hovenweep Indian ruins (very interesting),
Mesa Verde, and Bryce Canyon (very impressive). We saw other areas along
the way and plan to return another year because there was too much to see
in only two weeks.
The year before we went to Yellowstone Park and loved our visit there
as we had worked there in the '50s. Larry worked there five years and I
worked there three years. The first year I worked there we were going
steady, the next year we were engaged and the final year we were married.
It was a wonderful place to work and lots of fun. Esther Williams ate in
the dining room when I was a waitress and also Tennessee Ernie Ford and
his family (he was very handsome in person). My first year I was a maid
and the last two I was a waitress. Larry started out in the laundry and
ended up the last three years as a Porter (they parked the cars for the
guests and carried their bags out to the front of the hotel when they
were ready to leave). We both worked at the best place in the park: Old
Faithful Inn. We were there in 1949 when the earthquake hit and that was
quite an experience. Luckily it happened late at night so no one was in
the dining rooms or lobby as big boulders from the huge fireplace crashed
down and would have hurt people if they had been in that area. We helped
with clean-up and then headed to Golden, CO, two weeks later to see
relatives. Have any other Bombers worked in any of the National Parks?
It would be fun to hear your stories.
Another great park to visit is the Giant Redwoods in California. Hope
everyone is doing well. We are loving the beautiful sunny days in
Richland.

My wife and I recently spent a week in the area around Phoenix. It
had rained extensively before we arrived and continued most of the time
that we were there. We stayed with my cousin, Ruth, at her home in Gold
Canyon outside of Phoenix (near Apache Junction).
We toured a national park and hooked up with my old fellow '63 buddy,
George Barnett, and his wonderful wife, Peggy, near Tucson.
After a lunch at a cool Mexican Restaurant, George and Peggy
graciously invited us to their home on Lemon Mountain where we rehashed
old times and received a tour of the house. We walked up the hill and
George gave us an extensive, expert lesson on the local flora and fauna
as well as a history lesson on the area.
While we all chatted on the patio, George and I downed a few
Margaritas and visited his local neighbors--7 wolves next door in a pen.
Needless to say, they weren't too thrilled with us coming near their pen
to snap photos of them. They made quite a racket and probably would have
liked to have invited us to lunch with us as the main course.
George said that I had just missed Roy Ballard ('63) who had visited
a few days earlier. Sorry, Roy, wish we could have been there at the same
time.
Anyway, we had a great stay in spite of the rain. When we arrived
back in New Orleans, it was pouring rain much of the way home--so hard
that we nearly had to pull off on the side of the road. Strangely, it
hadn't rained at home the entire time we were in Arizona! When I called
my cousin the next day, she said it was dry and sunny. It happens every
time we travel!

Everyone talking about Mount Rushmore got me thinking. My Mom was
raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota. When they started their work
on it my Mom was in grade school. They asked the school kids to bring
their pennies to school to help pay for it as the government was
skeptical about paying for it. Her and her family used to go sit on a
hillside and watch them work. I bought a book several years ago about the
"making" of the great monument. When we went to South Dakota to visit my
grandmother it always included a trip up there. One year we were going
to see the nightly lighting of it, but the weather turned bad and they
cancelled it that night. I remember, too, they never charged to go up and
see it. The only thing they charged for was to get into the cabin where
the main force behind it lived. My Mother, brother (Howard-'72 RIP), and
I went there in 1990 to see it again. There still was no charge except to
park. The ranger instructed my Mom where to park and she wouldn't go in
that far. My brother and I walked up to the visitors' center to take
pictures. I told my Mom when we got back to the car, she should have
parked where he indicated as it was the closest row to the sidewalk. She
chose to stay in the car. Oh, those memories.

I wanted to let everyone on the Alumni Sandstorm know that my
brother, Lloyd Carter Russell ('67), passed away in Snowflake, AZ, at
his residence. He lived by himself out in the desert, and was discovered
on February 19th by a Navajo County Sheriff deputy who was in the habit
of checking in on him. He had been in poor health for some time, but was
determined to keep his independence. I will be sending Maren his obituary
to add to the site in a few days. I am making a memorial scrapbook, and
would appreciate any stories that you might have about his high school
years.

I enjoyed your posting of 2/26/05 about Yellowstone. How neat that
you could work there. It's a fascinating place which, I assume, changes
over the years - not the physical features, but other things. My parents
visited there in 1936 with my grandmother and me in tow. Things were
comparatively primitive in those days. We had a '32 Buick and what was
then called a "half-tent." At the end of each day the car would be parked
and bedding arranged inside for grandma and me. The tall side of the tent
was then opened and extended over and around part of the car. Mom and Dad
roughed it. It seems that Mom told me the Old Faithful Inn existed in
those days, but not much else. Aside from seeing a great assortment of
animals I remember very little. The Park had a feeding ground for bears -
one of the few things I could recall. The Park rangers kept a watchful
eye on the feed, a scattering of sugar cane, piled in a clearing near
one of the ponds. They allowed my Dad to feed a few stocks to the half-
dozen or so black bears that had assembled. The next time we visited
Yellowstone, in early July of 1943, I was better able to enjoy the
sights, Old Faithful, Morning Glory Pool, Fisherman's Bridge (where we
were allowed to feed pieces of bread to the huge specimens), Yellowstone
Falls, fishing in a small lake at West Yellowstone (and there devoured by
mosquitos), etc. The snow in back of Old Faithful Inn was stacked as high
as the eaves of the second story. The front sides and the parking lot had
been cleared for visitors. We had a wholesome and delicious lunch at the
Inn. After the wonders of Yellowstone, Teton National Forest and Jackson
Hole were anti-climatic (to a 10-year old).

Our country's natural wonders are certainly on display at our
National Parks mentioned by many in the Sandstorm recently. Some of these
parks, such as Mt. Rushmore show the mark man has left on our land. But
our country is more than natural wonders. It is a nation created by
people. We learn of the great ones in school, but the minor legends we
learn about in our travels. One of these was a character I learned about
when making a 5 day visit to Death Valley National Park last year. I
found Death Valley to be one of the most photogenic spots I've ever
visited. The history of the area was also fascinating, some of it still
being created by characters like Marta Becket and her Amargosa Opera
House in Death Valley Junction. Driving to Death Valley from Las Vegas,
one drives through the little burg of Baker, on Interstate 15. Just west
of that is the turnoff to Zzyzx Road. I've seen that turnoff each time
I've driven I 15, but last year I stopped for a couple days in Zzyzx
Springs, 4 1/2 miles down a dirt road from the highway. It's now the
Desert Studies Center, administered by the California State University
System. But its founding is a story of a bizarre American character,
Curtis Howe Springer. In 1944, Springer settled on the site, created
a rustic 60 room resort, including a mineral spring health spa.
Masquerading as a physician and a Methodist misiter, he broadcast daily
religious and health programs from his radio station in Zyzyzx, including
his network of over 300 stations around the world. Using the power of the
airwaves, he was able to draw in donations and lucrative sales for his
"magic potions". People came from all over, donating their life savings
to stay, meditate, and be cured in the healing waters of Zzyzs Springs.
It's on the edge of Soda Dry Lake, which frequently is anything but dry.
There is a tiny but fairly deep pond on the site that is one of the only
two sites known that is home to the Mohave chub, an endangered fish just
a few inches long. This may have been the fish Springer crowed about on
his radio programs, when he invited people to his desert resort to enjoy
the great fishing. It was the "magic potions" which were Springer's
undoing. In 1974, after 30 years in business, Springer was raided by
federal marshals for FDA violations. During the process, they discovered
that he didn't even own the land he had used to build his empire. It had
been BLM land all along. Springer spent some time in jail. The feds
recovered the land and set up a cooperative management system with the
Cal State University. Springer died in 1990, but the kooky enterprise he
created still survives. It's a weird and wonderful place to visit on your
next trip to Death Valley. By all means, visit our National Parks, but
keep your eyes open for other truly wonderful experiences along the road.

investment at a reasonable price and a great historic/old restored
farmhouse with over 4 acres of land, then this is a great opportunity for
someone! It's a pretty, rural area between Salisbury and the Virginia
border with deer, wild Turkey (eatin' kind--drinkin' kind is good, too)
and other assorted critters and lots of fishing in the Bay. If anyone is
interested or knows of anyone who might be interested, give a look-see at
both the business and house (sold separately or together) on his business

work in the store. It's an easy drive to Washington, D.C. and Richmond
and not terribly far from other historic areas and cities. Love those
crab cakes!!

preposition, which I know always bothered my English teachers. have

I love travel. I've probably mentioned all this before. In '98 I
visited fifteen national parks on one of my travels. I never wanted to
see another park as long as I lived after that trip. Of course, the
next year comes and I'm off again to some place I have never seen. For
example, I drove across Death Valley one July and my traveling buddy that
trip thought his dog was going to die. I've never seen a dog pant so fast
and never realized their tongues were that long. We decided to include
her with the minute by minute spraying with our water bottles and she
survived. At the Alamo, Steve had to stay with the dog while I went and
checked out the national treasure. 110° in the shade in San Antonio, TX.
I don't travel with dogs (the animal) anymore. I just couldn't imagine
missing something like that because you "needed" to bring your dog, cat
or bird because, She's family, Maddy! . Oh well, not my problem.
Two years ago a college buddy and I were in a six-man tent on Outer
Banks, NC when a lightening storm accompanied by heavy drenching rain
and wind came busting through. A few times before I had seen it rain
sideways; digging razor clams on the Washington coast in winter with a
lantern at one o'clock in the morning on an odd day (versus even last
season) with my brother-in-law, Jerry Kelly (KHS '64). Nevertheless, I
had never seen it rain level with sporadic upward angles before. The
miracle of modern tent poles was a savior. The tent was listing at about
a flapping 30° + or - a couple degrees and only one pole snapped.
Lightening storm is not said lightly east of the Rocky Mountains. Large
trunk, wicked, snappers that kill several hundred people yearly (Florida
#1). Although I had seen many visiting my grandparents in south central
Iowa growing up, an awesome sight if you have never been involved. And in
a tent on Outer Banks with zero shelter... was a night of sublime terror.
But, what are you going to do about it 3000 miles from home? The answer:
deal with it. An aluminum arrow shaft and duct tape fixed that problem
other than wondering what a lightening rod was made of.
I was in a campground in Tennessee next to two young couples that decided
to give their babies to their moms and go camping for a weekend. They
found it interesting that I was from Washington and how odd it was
listening to me (articulation odd, not the other). For example, if I said
I needed a pop, the girls would get red-faced and giggle, but if I said
soda I would get a Pepsi Cola (something I learned in a New Orleans
grocery store two years prior). I found them equally amusing, many times
apologizing while having them repeat what they had just said. Hillbillies
from some little burg in the TN hills. Never to late in life for a mutual
lesson. These kids were very respectful and endearing. In their early
twenties, cute as a bug's ear, none had ever been out of their state
since being knee high to a grasshopper, or ever. The American people I
meet on the road is what really makes me want to go go go. Just don't
ask them for directions. I find them very refreshing after spending ten
months with "hey, dude." Not that I don't love this SoCal beach town I
presently live in because I do. I just wouldn't want to live here
forever.
I could go on and on, but I will spare you. The parks in our nation are
beyond wonderful. We were blessed with wise men (President Theodore
Roosevelt being one) with vision and foresight about setting land
aside from the greedy, hacking, whacking, take, take, take American
businessmen. No matter how easy it is to point out faults of a person
over a lifetime, how fortunate we are that such men have came along from
time to time in the history of our country.
Just make sure who you travel with. You could wind up with a travel buddy
that has you stopping every 500 yards for fifty miles so they can save
turtles lives off some Ohio back country road; stopping at every other
store in mountainous West Virginia looking for pickled eggs; holding
a unnecessarily large, rear view mirror obstructing, souvenir Indian
pottery piece bought at Wall Drug, Wall, SD in their lap for hundreds of
miles to keep it from breaking while complaining about missing the
exit to Laura Ingalls Wilder's home somewhere out there in the Dakota
Territory; seriously needing to hug a redwood tree in northern coastal
California; driving the long route through Death Valley; wanting/having/
needing to swim in a mirror flat, hot watered, no breeze, man-made beach
on the Gulf of Mexico in Mississippi in August; sleeping in the front
seat of your Ford Ranger pickup in Fargo, North Dakota at a truck stop
full of loud refrigerated semi trailers in July because the joint has
a great breakfast steak; ordering you breakfast grits in Montgomery,
Alabama at a Burger King; eating sliced cactus fried in olive oil as a
main course in Van Horn, Texas and whatnot.
This year, as long as I am still healthy, I'm traveling alone with my
North Slope two-man tent with only enough room for one. Anybody ever been
to the Kentucky Fried Chicken Museum and restaurant in London, Kentucky?

Wow - just like reading a travel magazine.
Carol Black Foster ('48): The state of Washington did not allow the
stores to sell yellow margarine. One of the things that developed out of
the War (World II) was a package inside plastic with an orangy looking
capsule that you squeezed and then kneaded until you had yellow
margarine. The state finally had an election that would allow you to
purchased yellow margarine - I remember our neighbor coming over and
telling my mother that Oly passed. My mother, who never voted, didn't
know who Oly was.
Ed Wood ('62): Sometimes the side roads are more interesting than
whatever it was that you were going to visit.
Traveling is so interesting. One time, on the way to Ohio, we stopped in
Wamsutter, Wyoming. There was a car there that was pure mud and it was
about 2:30 p.m. When we walked into the store this guy was saying: "I
was here about 6:30 a.m. and I'm lost." It is small things like that you
remember from trips. Another time we met this couple in Nebraska who were
traveling to Washington. When they saw our Washington plates they asked
my dad about the roads (before Interstates). Daddy told them the worse
place was Deadman's Pass (Cabbage Hill). We met those same people in
Pendleton and the guy said, "Boy am I glad I talked to you. That was
awful."
Gary Behymer ('64): Termination Winds - we came into Richland for the
first time in the middle of a termination wind. My dad had written to
us about them. He certainly told the truth. One day a friend and I were
walking past CC Anderson's (on Goethals - now Jadwin) holding hands. She
kept saying, "Are you there?" I kept telling her I was still holding her
hand.
Linda Reining ('64): Pert Near - I still say that. If someone asks me if
I am ready to go somewhere I usually say pert near.
Rick Maddy ('67): Ohio had some lulu electrical storms. They manufactured
black powder (Remington Arms/duPont). It had to be packed a certain way
and during World War II they had inexperienced help. Every time they had
a lightning storm the Power Plant would blow up and I became frightened
of lightning.
My grandmother used to make pickled eggs. She would put them in a
container with beets and some other stuff and we had purple eggs. Wow!
I thought you could buy grits in the south at anytime of the day or
night. That was one thing that my mother never fixed - she didn't like
grits. I attended an international convention in Louisville, KY and they
served grits for breakfast and my roommate did not like them and she
would not give that poor waiter a tip.
Is that the same Kentucky Fried Chicken place that is two stories (only
one on the planet I think). I can't remember - is London near Hazard? I
have cousins that live near Hazard and one of my cousins pointed it out
to me. I guess you know they don't say KFC.
Stupid People: I listened to a news show one night when the guy said,
"During World War Eleven -----." Apparently whoever typed his stories had
put down World War II.

Okay, I was born in the extreme South West corner of Missouri in the
LITTLE town of Carthage. There were a lot of Southern sympathizers there.
Sbout You all or All of you. we said Y'all and do ya know? Di ya hear,
etc. We ended a lot of sentences with a? My Dad said things were
"tolerable" a lot and I finally figured out that he meant something was
okay.

I agree with you about the Tetons and Jackson Hole. After Yellowstone
they were definitely anti-climatic.

I remember those Ozarkians in Southern Missouri saying "pert near".

I remember the white margarine that had to be colored yellow. When
we first got to Richland wouldn't let the stores sell it. So we had to
go to Oregon to get it. We always went on the weekend and ate in a
little restaurant near the store. It was like a family outing at least
once a month.

As far back as I can remember my Dad would say, Slicker than snot on
a brass door knob. When I was real little I didn't like to touch door
knobs of any kind, but I got over it.

was down to the ground until about noon, then the sun came out
and the rest of the day was absolutely gorgeous, just a touch
nippy, but nice.

Hey, Rick Maddy ('67), thanks for the "heads up" on the traveling
companions. Ha! I'm getting ready to take off for a 2 month RV trip AND
I'm taking 2 dogs! Glad to know about spraying them if (when) it gets
too hot. My friend from Alaska, who now lives in Austin, TX, will fly to
Portland, OR on March 8th. I'll pick her up there in my car, then we'll
get her stuff packed into the motor home and leave here the 9th. I
haven't done this kind of trip before (although I have driven to and from
Alaska a couple of times by myself and with a cat). I've never been to
New Mexico or Texas, and I know I will love seeing that part of the
country, as well as friends and relatives along the way. Shirley thinks
we ought to go to New Orleans, but I don't know if we'll have time to get
that far. She has to go back to work the 30th. If we do, Maren, I'll give
you a shout.

Re: Yellowstone Park in about 1946
I went on a wonderful vacation with the Vaché family (Bombers, all)
as "mother's helper" and I still vividly remember some of the places
where we camped and the awesome things we saw. Swimming at Coeur'd'Alene,
horseback riding near Butte, Montana, watching Old Faithful and feeding
the bears. (Okay, so that was a really DUMB thing to do, but no harm came
to us. I guess that was before the bears began to feel the pressure of
too many buildings and tourists. I remember one getting into the food
stash of some other campers, but the Park Rangers kept a watchful eye.)
Other awesome sights were the Paint Pots, the beautiful Morning Glory
pool, Buffalo and Elk... the list goes on and on. It was an incredible
experience!
I'm taking my computer and am hopeful of checking in with the
Sandstorm from time to time. (The operative word here, of course, is
"hopeful"!)

I'm loving the pronunciation pundits, mostly 'cause I remember the
humiliation of peer instruction on arriving in Richland with the
following (still smarting from!) lingual demands: Horse, not harse!
Creek, not crik! Dishcloth, not dishrag! Don't know who set the locals
(who were all imports!) as authorities on language but I had a similar
experience MANY years later when sitting around a table in England and
the only American present. In a lull of conversation, a limey looked at
me and said: "I can't believe that you're not putting on that accent!"
All that time, I'd been sitting there enjoying the sound of THEIR
accents! Amusing how language not only defines us but reveals our
origins. Too bad that TV, etc. is homogenizing the American "dialects"
and we're all sounding more alike. I love the southern drawl and the
eastern idiom and all the international influences on our speech. Indeed,
it sounds like we really were a melting pot in this Hanford experience!

May I encourage everyone that has not already done so, to please post
yourself on the Classmates.com site. I have been able to track down
school mates through this site and ran across friends that I had not
communicated with in some time. There are more and more joining as
time goes on, but would love to see more. Our Col-Hi and Richland High
deserves to lead the crowd in student posting, and don't forget teachers
and parents, they are also encouraged to sign in. There are other sites
also, but I have found Classmates.com to be all encompassing. No one
can email you unless they pay their dues so don't think you will be
"Bomb"-barded with email.
Further, the class of '60 is having their 45th class reunion in
September and if you eye-balled our missing/lost list that was posted in
the 2/26/05 Sandstorm, and maybe know of a sibling or relative of the
missing person, please pass that information on to me at MSing357@aol.com

Hey there Bombers and Bomberettes...
Wow, been a really busy couple weeks! Two Bridal show booths later and
a house almost purchased... I need to get back in touch with my Sandstorm
roots.
I was catching-up on my pile of Sandstorms sitting in my in box.
Having travelled quite a bit of the world and the US over the past 50-
some-odd (and I DO mean "odd") years; I have been blessed to see some
really neat places and things. For example, the houses on "The Battery"
in Charleston, SC. I'd have to list The Grand, Bryce and Zion Canyons,
anywhere with a view of the Pacific Ocean, the Alps in Switzerland, the
Isle of Malta, the Going to the Sun Highway in Montana, the entire Front
Range in Colorado, the Anza-Borrego Desert in the spring, the Roman ruins
at Leptis Magna (Libya), Lake Washington, Crater Lake, Payette Lake, Mt.
Fuji, the Islands of the Swedish Archapelligo, the Sahara Desert, the
edge of the polar icecap in Greenland (with a full sun at midnight),
the forests of Siberia and the Olympic Peninsula, the old churches of
northern Germany, Buckingham Palace, Red Square, the Museum of Science
and Industry (Chicago), the lights on The Strip in Las Vegas, the Sapporo
Ice Festival and so much more come to mind. Later, rather than sooner,
I'd list Disneyland, Magic Mountain and stuff of that nature. Simply put,
there is just more wonderful stuff to see than the human mind can absorb
in an average lifetime! (In MHO).
By the way, I checked-out the Sharon Tate site that Gary Behymer
('64) pointed to. There I saw a picture of a lovely young lady standing
(I think) on the deck of a sailing vessel on a lake (I think). Could I
pry some details about that sighting from anyone?
Hopefully, the high point of this week for me will be the closing on
the house we plan to move into overlooking the Mighty Columbia. A few
hits on my website by prospective clients would be nice, too, following
the shows.

A couple of other little tidbits about Mount Rushmore. The gentleman
who did the project was well known in Georgia. He had been the one
originally chosen to do the Stone Mountain project. He had gotten it OKed
when he had a run in with the people wanting it done. Someone in South
Dakota knew of his work as a sculptor and got him to come to SD and do
something there. He originally envisioned just Washington and Lincoln
on some of those "needle rocks". He found the perfect mountain in Mount
Rushmore and changed his plans several times before it was completed.
Jefferson was supposed to be on his lower right, but the granite was
bad in that spot. Another little known fact is none of workers were
sculptors, they were miners. One gentleman on his crew had a disagreement
with him and went down the road, found his own mountain, and started the
Crazy Horse Memorial. One thing I read at some point in a magazine was
the area to the right of Washington's head. If one looks at it closely it
looks like a profile of an Indian head. No one knows if this was part of
his plans, or as some have suggested, it is just natural erosion of the
granite over the years.

I made the trip to Mt. Rushmore in the late '80s. I couldn't help but
noticing that if you took that bushy mustache and the wire rim glasses
off of Teddy Roosevelt.... you got a dead ringer for Mike Davis ('74).

portion of the tournament application and indicate your number. Also,
green shorts with logo have been added to the application as well. If
you would like shorts, fill out that section of the application.
However, since I need to have these printed before the tournament, I
cannot take orders for Jersey numbers or Shorts after May 13th.
